Tiantan Park – Temple of Heaven Park

Temple of Heaven

The Temple of Heaven, literally the Altar of Heaven is a complex of religious buildings situated in the southeastern part of central Beijing. The complex was visited by the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for good harvest. It has been regarded as a Taoist temple, although Chinese Heaven worship, especially by the reigning monarch of the day, pre-dates Taoism.

Imperial Vault of Heaven

The Imperial Vault of Heaven was used to house the tablet of the God of Heaven and the tablets of the emperors’ ancestors. It was first built in 1530 and then rebuilt in 1752. It is a circular structure, covered with blue titles and topped by a gilded ball. The whole structure is supported by 16 pillars, eight of which are posts propping the eaves and another eight inside are gilded one. The wall around the buildings is the well-known Huiyinbi (Echo Wall).
