IL-14PS 535 President Aircraft |
The existence of this aircraft was unknown to the outside world and proved to be a sensation when first discovered and reported in 2012, when Juche Travel started organizing aviation tours to North Korea. |
The type specification -PS- indicates "Personentransport / Salon" and describes the function of this unique and rare aircraft as a Passenger / VIP configurated IL-14. |
This aircraft carries the construction number 147001342 and is the 42nd aircraft manufactured at the plant in Moscow-Khodinka, although the type specification -P- indicates a production at the FWD - Flugzeugwerke Dresden, the Dresden plant. However not all IL-14P have been manufactured in Dresden. |
This aircraft in particular provides a few unique and very unusual features. |
The landing gear door has been manufactured in Dresden. |
The horizontal stabilizer of the -535- has been either taken from an IL-12 or from one of the earlier IL-14 versions. In contrast to the -535-, the stabilizers manufactured at the Dresden plant were all shaped in a rectangular manner. |
Josef Stalin himself presented this aircraft as a personal gift to the „Great Leader“ Kim Il Sung in 1958. |
Kim Il Sung flew on this aircraft in January 1959 to the 21st Party Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. |
This aircraft is carefully preserved and is believed to still be in an airworthy condition, although its last flight has been recorded at the end of the 1980s. |
Meanwhile this aircraft has been packed up and removed from the site at Sunan airport and transported to the International Friendship Exhibition at Mount Myohyang, its final resting place. |
