Pyongyang Station

Pyongyang Railway Station has existed in some form since the late 19th century. The occupying imperial Japanese government installed trams [Heijo Station] in 1923. The tram network was destroyed during the Korean War. Since 1990 the DPRK has built new tram lines, using Tatra trams from the former Czechoslovakia, some new and some bought secondhand from cities in the former East Germany. Trams are one of the most common ways for Koreans to commute in Pyongyang.

Imperial Japan occupied Korea from the late 19th C. until 1945, at the end of the second World War. This colonial annexation lead to Japan’s success in the Russo-Japanese and Sino-Japanese Wars of the early 20th C. Japan used the Korean peninsula (especially and obviously northern Korea) as its strategic and logistical base through continental Asia The only positive outcome for Koreans was a thoroughly modern infrastructure of central paved roads, rail, and tram installations which they successfully reconstructed in 1945 after the Korean War in 1953.
