Attention VEB Plasticart Airplane Kit Collectors and Interflug Aviation Enthusiasts! |
A beautifully assembled VEB Plasticart Ilyushin IL-18 turboprop airliner in 1/100 scale. This kit dates from 1974, and was recently built by me, straight from the box. Plasticart kits included a small vial or tube of cement and silver paint; I chose to paint the underside and flight surfaces with Tamiya gloss aluminum for quality. |
The IL-18 is one of Plasticart's earliest kits; the first ones were produced in the early 1960s with East German Lufthansa markings, and pre-painted silver fuselage belly. Early Plasticart kits sich as the IL-18 had smooth surfaces with minimum detail, and no display stand. Plasticart continued to produce the IL-18 into the 1970s with Interflug markings. A display stand was never included, but the carton and instructions were updated. Unfortunately, the IL-18 was dropped from Plasticart's line of kits around the late seventies, early eighties. It did not make it into the Master Modell line, and boxed kits are getting harder to find. |
This kit looks identical to the one pictured on the 1974 VEB Plasticart catalog. |
Dimensions: Fuselage length - 14 inches; wingspan 14.75 inches, height (from bottom of wheels to tip of vertical stabilizer) - 4 inches. |
Plasticart may or may not have originally included plasticene to weigh the nose down for display. It is listed in the instruction manual but was not included with this kit. I use a small toothpick to prop up the rear end. |
