ATTENTION VEB PLASTICART & AEROFLOT AIRLINES COLLECTORS! |

A VEB Plasticart 1/100 scale Yakovlev YAK-40 regional jet airliner in Aeroflot markings. This kit is from the former East Germany. I built it straight from the box, using extra special attention to detail. Paint and original decals went on beautifully; a real spectacular airplane model! |

This is a very unique model because Plasticart often chose to model Soviet civil aircraft after prototypes or concept versions. This YAK-40 is no exception; it is a reproduction of the prototype CCCP-19661 which is very hard to find photographs of. I've only seen one grainy photograph of it in flight on the web, and another of its tail end in Aircraft of the Soviet Union by Bill Gunston, 1983. Apparently, the protoype JAK-40 may have been the only version to have the all-blue tail fin, and flat-edged intake opening on the tail-mounted engine. Later production versions had a slanted intake, and a striped blue paint scheme on the tail. Both early versions were painted all white, with blue markings; later versions had the traditional silver-grey underbelly and wings. |
